How to choose a cordless vacuum
Cordless stick vacuums have replaced corded uprights in many UK homes. They're easy to grab, but specs are confusing and prices swing a lot. This guide covers what actually matters, and what you can reasonably expect at each budget.
Runtime: read the small print
The headline runtime, often "up to 60 minutes", is almost always measured on the lowest power setting, usually without a motorised floor head. On carpet, or in boost mode, runtime can be a fraction of that.
- Flat or small home: 25–30 minutes of real-world cleaning is usually enough.
- Larger house or lots of carpet: look for 40+ minutes, or a model with a removable battery so you can buy a spare.
- Check reviews for boost-mode runtime. It's the number that tells you how the vacuum copes with tough jobs.
Suction power
Some brands quote suction in air watts (AW), others in pascals (Pa), and some don't quote it at all, so direct comparisons are difficult. More useful signs of cleaning performance are a motorised brush head for carpets, an anti-tangle brush if you have pets or long hair, and independent test results.
Weight and handling
Most stick vacuums weigh between about 2.5kg and 3.5kg. That sounds light, but much of the weight sits in your hand. If you'll be cleaning stairs or ceilings, a lighter model or one with good balance makes a real difference.
Bin size and emptying
Bins typically range from around 0.3L to 0.8L. Smaller bins fill quickly in homes with pets. Look for a bin that empties with one action, without having to pull hair off by hand. Some newer models include a self-emptying dock, which adds to the price.
Filters and allergies
If anyone in the house has allergies, look for a sealed system with a HEPA-type filter. Washable filters save money over time, but they need to dry fully, often for 24 hours, before you put them back.
Battery life and warranty
Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time. A removable battery means you can replace it rather than the whole vacuum. Check the warranty length and whether it covers the battery. Some brands offer an extended warranty when you register the product.

Price tip: cordless vacuums are among the most frequently discounted home products. A model shown at "£399, now £249" may have been £249 for months. Check the 90-day average before you decide a price is good.
